Meta System Thermal Performance Engineer in Sunnyvale, California

Summary:

At Reality Labs we aim to bring together the brightest cross-disciplinary minds in one place to deliver on our mission: build tools that help people feel connected, anytime, anywhere. As a System Thermal Performance Engineer you will take a critical role in developing systems for VR, AR, Smart Glasses and Wearables, or New Technology Initiatives. You will be part of a team exploring and developing consumer electronics products over the full lifecycle, from prototypes to mass-production. You will work as part of a cross functional team requiring collaboration and curiosity in domains inside and outside thermal engineering. Our ideal candidate has strong physics based low order modeling fundamentals (including fluid systems), simulation experience (from a simple DAE system to high order analysis e.g. CFD), is comfortable modeling initially unknown to them physical systems with variable degrees of fidelity, and capturing their key interactions at the system level. This might include fan performance, display performance, die temperature dynamics, etc. They should also be comfortable enough with control theory to propose architectures spanning multi subsystems, prototype and eventually validate them. As a result, they partner with product managers to define objectives of system performance tools and throttling logics, as well as discuss implementation with software engineers. Finally and above all, they can propose unconventional solutions that intersect analytical approaches and our unique products.

Required Skills:

System Thermal Performance Engineer Responsibilities:

  1. Expand the capability and impact of our integrated system performance framework, focused on thermal performance either by developing and integrating new physical models, or applying framework to new products.

  2. Partner with product managers, systems engineers and architectures to gather recommendations on how current version of performance framework can bring more value to the design cycle.

  3. Partner with software engineers to implement and test control architecture.

  4. Distill complex systems to simplified analytical models to quickly identify system thermal design approaches, seeking the simplest approach that captures the effects of interest.

  5. Expand or create new reduced order methodologies compatible with thermal simulation team tools and processes.

  6. Validate approaches with through prototype testing.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 4+ years experience in simulation or methodology development using tools such as Julia or Python

  2. Foundational knowledge and background in heat transfer, thermodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, and control theory.

  3. Experience modeling low order physical systems e.g. fan performance, SOC, etc. Experience using CFD tools.

  4. Understanding in control theory, gain tuning of PID loops and driving requirements.

  5. Experience identifying critical problems, breaking them down to their essential elements, proposing novel and efficient solutions, and implementing solution for cross-functional stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Expert knowledge in thermal/fluid systems and/or numerical methods and 2+ years of experience in applied mathematics/simulation.

  2. Demonstrated experience developing low order physical simulation frameworks focused on overall performance, striking “just enough” physics versus speed trade-offs.

  3. Experience in Python, Julia, Matlab in a package development environment.

  4. Background in control theory to support thermal control system development.

Public Compensation:

$170,000/year to $240,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
