Job Description

Performs electrocardiograms (EKGs) and other cardio graphic tests as directed by physician. Performs related clerical duties, as required.

Job Responsibility

    • Clinical Functions
  • Performs EKG and pediatric EKG testing following department policies and procedures.

  • Identifies patient and assists patient in preparing for testing.

  • Applies electrodes for EKG testing according to universal standards for lead placement.

  • Applies electrodes for pediatric EKG testing to include right-sided chest leads and posterior chest leads.

  • Applies electrodes for Signal Average EKG testing according to policy and procedure.

  • Answers questions regarding procedure in order to make patient as relaxed as possible.

  • Prepares EKG machine for daily use.Checks equipment and supplies, assembles basic EKG equipment.Removes and cleans equipment, and at the end of shift.

  • Cleans machine with alcohol after testing isolation patients, according to department guidelines for infection control standards.

  • Performs Signal Average EKG testing.

  • Responds to Code 99 situations per departmental policies.

  • Provides training to Clinical Associates, educating them of required standards for performing EKG testing along with supplying ongoing clinical support service.Provides EKG testing in-service training for nursing staff.

  • Assists Clinical Associates and Nursing staff unable to obtain EKG's in Patient Focus Care Unit.

  • Assists Patient Focus Care Units when equipment problems occur by assessing situation and providing unit with correct course of action.

  • Reports any problems with equipment and/or supplies to department management.

  • Assists with uncommon requests for EKG testing such as posterior chest lead placement, right-sided chest lead placement, pediatric lead placement, inspiration and expiration tracings, etc.

  • Submits EKG clinical reviews and written documentation to Cardiology department for competency assessment/Reviews for technical and clerical accuracy.Submits to department management.

  • Notifies Physicians, off-sites, and patient care areas of significant findings reported by Cardiologists in order to supply immediate medical attention for optimum patient care.

    • Clerical Functions
  • Programs appropriate patient information on all EKG's performed.

  • Cuts, mounts, and supplies patient information on tracings.Attaches previous patient EKG file to EKG tracing for comparison.Submits to Cardiologist for interpretation.

  • Sorts and photocopies interpreted EKG tracings.

  • Breaks down original interpreted EKG tracings into appropriate categories for charting on in-house patients.Mails and/or faxes KEG reports to physician's offices.

  • Posts original EKG tracings and EEG/EMG/ECHO/ and vascular reports on patient charts.

  • Pulls prior EKG report tracings for all PAST patients.Copies and forwards copies to PAST office daily.

  • Checks in hospital computer system for updated patient information.

  • Distributes EKG tracings to appropriate departments when patients are no longer in-house.

  • Processes Signal Average EKGs through appropriate computer system according to current procedures and policies regarding Signal Average testing.

  • Operates hospital Order Communication computer system to verify EKGs and check Cardiology patient information.

  • Uses department computer to generate appropriate labels, forms and signs for EKG and ECHO filing systems.

  • Answers telephone in a professional manner relating to inquires, instructions and information regarding EKG testing.

  • Sends out copies and faxes of EKG and ECHO reports to attending Physicians.

  • Assists in front reception area with customer relations by supplying technical information and directions to Cardiology patients and families.

    • Instructs new technicians in use of department equipment and clerical routines.
    • Informs department management when supplies need to be ordered.
    • Informs department management of any problems regarding patients, physicians, staff and supplies.
    • Greets patients on arrival to Cardiac Stress Lab and assists patient and transporter with patient transfer to exam stretcher.
    • Prepares patient for stress test by placing electrodes and attaching to module.
    • Conducts computer search for cardiac enzyme lab results at physician's request.
    • Enters demographic data from order sheet to Cardiac Stress Lab computer.
    • Delivers physicians' written order to pharmacy.
    • Picks up medication at pharmacy or 'tube station' in CCU.
    • Fills syringes, to be utilized by physician to flush IV lines, with saline.
    • Obtains blood pressure while patient is undergoing exercise stress.
    • Pages physicians and/or calls operator to call a code at physician's request.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Job Qualification

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.

  • Graduate of an accredited EKG school or course for EKG technicians, required.

  • Completion of a certificate EKG program, preferred.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in an EKG Lab or training in a Physician's office, required.

The salary range and/or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.When determining a team member's base salary and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., location, specialty, service line, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, negotiated contracts, budget and internal equity).

The salary range for this position is $23.86-$26.23/hour
