POSITION SUMMARY:

Kelly is seeking a highly skilled Senior Medicinal Chemist to join our team within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This role is critical in supporting the planning and execution of cutting-edge research experiments, with a focus on synthesizing and optimizing chemical probes, developing novel research treatments, and advancing the science through innovative target projects. The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry and have extensive experience in a chemistry research laboratory. This position requires strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills to effectively manage and coordinate research projects, train laboratory staff, and contribute to scientific publications.

TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Design and conduct complex experiments and studies based on scientific theories and principles.

  • Propose and investigate new target projects relevant to human health.

  • Develop and optimize synthetic routes for chemical probes and libraries.

  • Perform scale-up synthesis and conjugation of chemical probes for biological assays.

  • Collaborate on assay design and method development.

  • Train staff on the use of laboratory instruments and equipment.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, including HPLCs and spectrophotometers.

  • Ensure adequate laboratory space and facilities for ongoing research.

  • Oversee project data quality and maintain electronic laboratory notebooks.

  • Assist in the review of proposals for resource allocations.

  • Analyze and interpret research data; prepare detailed reports, presentations, and manuscripts.

  • Co-author and review scientific publications and patents.

  • Present research findings at national scientific meetings and conferences.

  • Develop and deliver oral presentations and posters for internal and external audiences.

  • Coordinate projects with external collaborators, proposing SAR strategies.

  • Work with the technology transfer office to facilitate patent filings.

  • Explore and evaluate new techniques, instruments, and software for laboratory use.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related discipline.

  • Extensive experience working in a chemical research laboratory.

  • Experience with analytical chemistry techniques such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).

  • Proficiency with software including ChemDraw, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and chemical search engines (SciFinder, Reaxys).

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and equipment maintenance.
