The Las Animas Hatchery works in conjunction with the 18 other State Fish Units to spawn, rear, and stock cold, cool, and warmwater fish into the waters of Colorado according to the approved “Fish Stocking Schedule”, helping to fulfill Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s mission: to perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and to provide enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and inspire current and future generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural resources.

The Las Animas Hatchery produces approximately 3 million warmwater sportfish annually to enhance Colorado's fishery and recreational opportunities. Therefore, it contributes a significant part of the $2.3 billion dollar sport fishing and recreation industry in Colorado.

Description of Job

This position assists the hatchery manager in managerial and fish production duties to accomplish hatchery goals helping to fulfill the mission of the agency. Also serves the role as a work crew leader at the facility.

Hatchery Management

Acts as the work lead to monitor personnel schedules to accomplish hatchery goals. Ensure proper hatchery procedures by formulating, delegating, and overseeing daily duties. Implement standard operating procedures. Execute administrative duties as assigned by manager including data entry, budget planning, generating reports, and correspondences.

Fish Culture

Computes required amounts of feed and feeds fish. Sort fish according to size using sorting equipment and take counts and weights on fish to determine size, growth rate, and feed requirements. Transfers fish into ponds, raceways, or tanks, which have been prepared by disinfecting, cleaning, fertilizing, screening, and filling. Cleans ponds, raceways and tanks as needed.

Fish Hauling

Ships and distributes fish and eggs by different methods. Operates large trucks with specialized transport tanks. Analyzes receiving waters and stocks fish.

Safety

Working with the hatchery manager and crew, ensure unit compliance with safety standards and safety trainings.

Equipment and Facilities Management

Inspects, operates and maintains various vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

Public Relations

Promotes and explains the policies, goals, and directives of the Division of Parks & Wildlife by providing tours of the hatchery, answering questions in person and by telephone, and providing information to visiting school classes and other interested parties.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years of relevant experience in in aquaculture, propagating and/or rearing fish, fish culture, collecting and recording of aquatic wildlife data and/or professional aquatic research or an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

OR

A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation

related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years

Substitutions

Appropriate education in biology, fisheries research, fisheries management, or fisheries biology, ecology, wildlife management, zoology, marine biology or ichthyology may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis for the experience requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position

  • Current or former Colorado Parks and Wildlife work or volunteer experience

  • Current or former Colorado Parks and Wildlife Hatchery Technician III or IV work

    Required Competencies

  • Organizational and time management skills

  • Have or be willing to obtain a CDL - Class B N-Liquid Bulk/Cargo Tanks and air brakes.

    Conditions of Employment

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver's license if operating a State vehicle.

  • Successful completion and passing of physical, background and drug screening required

  • Daily fish deliveries can result in overnight travel as needed

  • Required to live in onsite housing; Exempt from overtime, on-call 24/7.

  • Required to work holidays and weekends as part of a rotating work schedule

  • Hazing of predatory birds/animals will require the use of discharging cracker/pyrotechnics as a deterrent.

  • This position will require but is not limited to the handling of Formalin, bleach, disinfection solutions, equipment batteries, gasoline, diesel, spray paint, and motor oil.
