Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:NY HELPS This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In June 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:• Possession of a license and current registration as an Occupational Therapist in New York State; and one year of post-licensure experience as an occupational therapist.COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Section 70.1 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title SG-16 or above deemed eligible to transfer under §70.1 AND be licensed and currently registered to practice as an Occupational Therapist in New York State.Eligible List Appointment: Candidates who are reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for this title. may be considered for appointment. You must complete and return it as instructed on the letter.The Senior Occupational Therapist is a continuous recruitment examination. To qualify for the examination, you must be licensed and currently registered to practice as an Occupational Therapist in New York State AND have one year of post licensure occupational therapy experience. Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Senior Occupational Therapist position in the New York State School for the Blind. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: • Select, administer, score performance evaluations and assessments, and interpret test results of students to determine present level of functioning in performing the activities of daily living, strength and dexterity, gross and fine motor skills, interpersonal relations, communication, memory, coordination, and perceptual and problem-solving skills;• Assist therapists in working with students, both individually and in small groups, providing therapy or instruction in the use of arts and crafts materials, tools, simple machinery and other devices to improve fine-motor skills and coordination and to develop basic life skills; • Select and instruct activities that will help students learn work- and life-management skills consistent with their needs and capabilities in order to improve students’ decision making, abstract reasoning, memory, sequencing, coordination and perceptual skills; • Determine the need for, design, adapt, and fabricate adaptive equipment and other aids to improve functional skills and abilities;• Attend periodic meetings with other treatment team staff, families, and caregivers to discuss students’ progress;• Record prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in charts or computer database;• Complete required Medicaid documentation; and• Supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs).

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a 12- month permanent, competitive appointment or a 12-month permanent non-competitive appointment. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In June 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at candidate’s expense. The work schedule for this position includes hours of Monday through Friday 7:30 am – 3:30 pm. This position leads to a maximum salary of $82,656 through annual performance advances.
