The Salvation Army Assistant Camp Cook (June 14-August 04, 2024) in Ashford, Connecticut

Overview

Location:Camp CONNRI (Ashford, CT)

Status:Seasonal (June 14, 2024 – August 04, 2024)

Rate of Pay:$3,000.00 stipend plus room, board, bedding, laundry facilities, and recreational facilities provided.

Scope & Purpose of Position: To assist in the daily operation of the camp food service program.

Responsibilities

  • Assign kitchen staff to prepare and distribute all camper snacks.

  • Assist in keeping the pantry and stock areas clean, neat, and organized.

  • Assist in packaging and putting away leftovers, ensuring all items are correctly labeled and stored at the proper temperatures.

  • Assist in preparing food as the camp menu indicates.

  • Assist in routine sanitation of the kitchen and related equipment.

  • Assist in washing and putting away all dishes, pots, pans, serving and preparation equipment, and utensils according to State and ACA-regulated washing methods and temperatures.

  • Assist the Cook with inventory and daily food supplies.

  • Assist with evening staff snacks.

  • Check deliveries and submit bills to the Assistant Camp Director.

  • Clean and maintain all food preparation and storage areas.

  • Make sure that all meals are ready on time, tasty, well served, and with sufficient portions.

  • Store food and leftovers at proper temperature.

  • Work with the Cook to supervise kitchen personnel in preparing all meals and snacks.

  • Attend and participate in daily devotions and evening programs, including staff Vespers.

  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.

  • Enthusiastically participate in the total camping program.

  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.

  • Lead evening cabin devotions with campers as requested.

  • Participate in planning, delivering, and supervising evening programs, special events, camp activities, and other camp functions.

  • Participate in end-of-camp cleanup, addressing all living areas, program areas, and general camp areas.

  • Perform assigned administrative duties on each session's opening and closing days.

  • Provide a consistent, positive, Christian example to campers and staff.

  • Serve as a positive and professional representative of The Salvation Army.

  • Sit with campers at all programs and in the dining hall as scheduled.

  • Strive to be a personal example in conduct, conversation, and attitude consistent with established policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Experience working in a kitchen and a supervisory position at a camp or other institution is preferred.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally.

  • Ability to use kitchen equipment safely and correctly.

  • Knowledge of current kitchen state and ACA health and safety regulations and practices is essential.

  • Must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Employees must not attempt to teach any differing views of doctrine or practices or press them upon other staff members, campers, or guests as Camp CONNRI employees.

  • Must subscribe to Salvation Army principles/mission and abide by the camp’s personnel policies and practices as outlined in the Camp Staff Manual, including leaving the campgrounds during staff breaks between camping periods. Smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, using illegal drugs, and immoral conduct during the employment period will be grounds for immediate dismissal.

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.

  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply proper behavior-management techniques.

  • Ability to relate to youth and adults positively and understand the developmental needs of youth.

  • Certification from the American Red Cross for Advanced First Aid and CPR preferred.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in program areas designated camp program areas.

  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions.

  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance to constantly supervise campers.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
