Local Deploy is the R&D interface for the Canadian retail business with the purpose of supporting technical management of the existing and future retail portfolio. We translate regionally and globally agreed product mixes into local conditions and we are accountable for local consumer and customer requirements.

As a Senior Scientist - R&D for our Beauty & Personal Care category, you will lead interactions with Global and Regional R&D teams, including CTI (consumer insight & claims), Procurement, Marketing, Customer Development, Supply Chain, and external agencies. You will lead the Go-to Market R&D activities with accountability for:

  • Claims

  • Regulatory and legal conformity

  • Consumer and environmental safety

  • Compliant product labels

  • Technical support for incident management

Who You Are & What You’ll Do

As the Senior Scientist, aka local technical expert, you will exhibit excellent communication skills to provide accurate feedback to our cross-functional teams, and craft product stories for different audiences we have. Additionally, communicate or demonstrate the science behind our products to our marketing and PR partners as well as to key influencers and customers.

In this position we require you to maintain a strong long-distance relationship with international and North American regional team ensuring flawless communication with the team leaders and team members. You will focus across the Beauty Personal Care (BPC) portfolio in Canada and will require technical knowledge of product formulation, product benefits, and ingredients function.

Your Responsibilities Include,

  • Lead Country R&D for Unilever personal care portfolio working with the Technical Project Leader and cross-functional R&D team to ensure the precise transfer and execution of innovations and other R&D programs

  • Provide local feedback into Innovation/Renovation projects prior to R&D handoff of product to country

  • Provide technical leadership for local Marketing initiatives, including working with Legal, Regulatory, Customer Development, PR and Advertising agencies

  • Assist the technical review of a variety of advertisement materials, i.e. communication pieces, print ads, product labels, launch articles etc

  • Build locally compliant technical content for artwork and handle artwork approvals

  • Run and prioritize multiple projects at a time, while working on cross category teams

  • Provide technical expertise to incident management and crisis management teams

  • Provide technical support to Consumer Call Center on inquiries, complaints, product changes and new launches

  • Travel to customer meetings, manufacturing sites, and R&D centers

What You’ll Need To Succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering or related field with 3 - 5 years industry experience, product development or quality assurance experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Windows 10, specification databases. SAP PLM experience (or similar system) is preferred

  • Conversant with Canadian regulations regarding Personal Care products is an asset

  • Strong data analytical skill and ability to interpret analytical, clinical, and consumer testing data

  • Proven and demonstrated skills as a work stream leader in projects as well as demonstrated ability to handle less complex projects on their own

  • Previous experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment, working toward the completion of team initiatives, as well as personal objectives

  • Strong communication (verbally and written) and interpersonal skills along with strong organizational skills

  • Key strengths include multi-tasking, partner management and fast learning which are success enablers in this role

  • Adherence to procedures and ways of working in line with Unilever frameworks, standards, all company policies, programs, regulations, and safety rules
